Check the Measurement Basis Before Using an Image Scale as a Dimension
A dimension copied from a screenshot can look more definite than the record supporting it. Before using an image for procurement or construction coordination, ask what was measured, how the value was produced and whether the output is suitable for that decision.
Identify the actual record
Separate a photograph, a screen capture, an orthographic output and a measurement report. Keep the original file and any relevant metadata rather than relying on an image pasted into a message. Cropping or resizing can break assumptions about display scale. A ruler visible on a screen does not, by itself, establish the accuracy or reference system of the underlying record.
Ask about the measurement’s limits
State the feature and decision for which the dimension is needed. Ask the provider about the method, reference points and limitations included in the engagement. Avoid adding decimal places to suggest confidence that has not been established. If a critical clearance or fabrication dimension needs another form of verification, identify that requirement before an order is placed.
Preserve the decision trail
Record who supplied the value, the source version and who confirmed its intended use. Keep a provisional dimension visibly provisional. Do not describe a general documentation service as a boundary survey, engineering certification or fabrication guarantee unless that specific qualified service is actually provided. The useful result is a clear handoff between a record and the decision it can reasonably support.
Copyable worksheet
Use one row for each field. Mark unknown information clearly and retain the original records.
| Field | Your note |
|---|---|
| Original record and version | ____________________ |
| Feature and reference points | ____________________ |
| How the dimension was produced | ____________________ |
| Stated accuracy or limitation | ____________________ |
| Decision requiring verification | ____________________ |
Worked example
Illustrative example: a fictional team measures a doorway from a resized presentation image. Before ordering equipment, it asks for the original measurement basis and obtains the appropriate verification. The screenshot remains a communication aid instead of becoming an unsupported purchase dimension.
